Sports Fortnight – 26th June – 7th July 2017

Karate

All year groups have been busy with sporting activities during our annual Sports Fortnight.

The week started off with Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children enjoying a Karate Taster Session with Matthew from TKF. They learnt some of the basic rules and moves.

Zumba

The week continued with Year 1 and 2 children taking part in a lively and fast moving Zumba lesson. All the children thoroughly enjoyed joining in with this activity and getting their heart beats racing through dance exercise.

Tag Rugby

Mr Mann from the Dereham and West Norwich School Sports Partnership came to give Year 1 and Year 2 children a workshop on tag rugby skills.

Preschool Team Day

The local preschools along with the children from our Nursery had their own Team Day. The children got to try lots of new activities with their grown-ups.

Team Day

Our Team Day which had been postponed from the previous week due to bad weather was able to take place and we were very fortunate to have the Sports Leaders from Northgate High School to help run the activities. All the children got split into teams and had a go at 20 different multi skill activities.

Cheerleading

Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children had the opportunity to try the sport of cheerleading with Miss Coombes. They watched part of a cheerleading routine, got to try some of the jumps and even had a go at stunting in groups.

Gymnastics

A busy day to end our fortnight saw Reception and Year 1 children involved in a gymnastics session with coaches from Easton Gymnastics Club. The children played a fun warm up game, then practised and learnt the names for some gymnastic moves and finally had a go at some balancing along the benches and performing a jump at the end.

Athletics

Year 1 and 2 children also had an Athletics Skills workshop with children from Neatherd High School. The children did a variety of activities to help them with the skills of running, jumping and throwing.

What a fantastic couple of weeks!

Design and Technology – Summer 2017

This term children in the EYFS have enjoyed taking advantage of the glorious weather and have taken their design and technology skills outside. They have enjoyed using the outdoor area to build dens and have been practising evaluating and adapting their dens when they have not been fit for purpose. They have also enjoyed developing their ideas using the large construction equipment available.

Inside the classroom the children have enjoyed being involved in whole class junk modelling activities to design animals and habitats that they saw at the zoo.

Children have been learning new skills and have practised these skills in their free choice activities.

All children in the EYFS have continued to enjoy daily access to creative resources and have been encouraged to develop their ideas and adapt their creations when necessary.

Children in Year One have also enjoyed taking design and technology outside this term. They have been using their DT skills to design and create boats. The children used a range of materials to create their boats and then tested to see if they would float. The children were encouraged to talk about their creations and adapt their ideas when things did not turn out as they had expected.

Children in year two have been busy exploring our school and drawing maps. They were challenged to create a 3D map of our school and they used their design and technology skills to create 3D map using junk modelling. The children were very proud of their creations.

Sporting Stars Bronze Award

We were delighted to welcome Mr Mann, from the West Norwich and Dereham School Sports Partnership, back to Toftwood Infant school last week. Mr Mann was accompanied by Wendy Bear, the partnership’s mascot.

They came to present the Sporting Stars Bronze Award to the school for their achievements in PE. The award was presented to two of our pupils in Key Stage One.

The School Sports Partnership award was designed by Key Stage 1 schools within the SSP and is a great way to recognise the PE/Sporting success that schools are having at KS1. It helps all schools who participate to create a development plan for the coming year based on their progress. We were awarded the bronze standard for participating in competitions and festivals within the partnership and providing a sports enrichment fortnight where the children get to try new sports. In the future we hope to develop the role of the children in leading some sport activities and our involvement with local sports clubs.
